I told ‘you’ so...

The sun has come out in Wellington this week and it has ‘stopped raining’ long enough for me to be able to see some of the progress I am making towards the first of my goals, setting up my business, and because of the things that have happened I am more committed than ever to making this work.

The first good thing that happened was I got back the results of Assignment number Three, and being completely honest I was a little nervous when I first saw the email telling me it had been marked, because it was one of the most technically challenging things I have done in a very long time, and ultimately very important as far as being a gauge to how well I was doing in the course with all of my other commitments.

I think I might have mentioned that in doing the assignment I discovered how to actually use my camera, that all the pieces of the puzzle simply fell into place and I now have a much greater understanding of how it all works, because of the information I learnt in the assignment, but all this seemingly came at a cost.

I have discovered My tutor is not as committed to my assignments as I am, she is often distracted by her own world, and this has caused us to argue prior to my last assignment being handed in because I had asked her a lot of questions during the assignment (because I wanted to properly understand what I was doing) and she was taking longer and longer to reply.

She eventually told me that I had asked too many questions and should just submit my assignment, that if I got any of it wrong it would be explained in the summary of the answers, that she only worked part time as a tutor and was sometimes too busy to answer my questions, which I had asked a lot of.

I was far from happy as I didn’t completely understand the last part of the assignment, but I submitted the assignment anyway.

I was unsure how well I would do, I knew I had done a lot of work throughout the assignment, that I had tried to show how much I had learnt in the answers I provided, but I never expected to get a high mark when I received the results, I actually had to read it twice because I got 90% in assignment number three.

That made me very happy, all the hours I put in actually paid off and earned that 90% mark, but it also taught me a lot, it made me want to learn more, so the next step is Assignment Number Four.

One of the other big things that happened over the past week was I have actually figured out how I am going to start my business, what I am going to do to begin my plan of being able to travel around the world and take photos of the best race cars, street cars, and hot rods on the planet, and eventually sell limited edition art prints, raising money for various charities, and find somewhere I can build a home.

I have gone into this whole thing with a rough plan of what I want to achieve, but being completely honest I have never really known how to begin the process, how I would start to work towards what I want to do, I just had faith that at the right time I would figure it out, I knew I would have to work towards it, that it would not happen overnight, but I never knew how it would start, and now I do.

Last week I printed out a few of my older pictures on some canvas paper I had just brought, took them to work with me, and a young lady I like heaps asked how my course was doing, so I showed her some of my photos that I had printed out, to which she simply said that she thought they would look great as postcards, and I knew at that moment that would be the perfect way to combine everything I have done previously, with what I want to achieve, and be the perfect place to start from.

Since then I have done a little more work on the idea, a few concept drawings and started to investigate how I could sell limited edition postcards, postcards that include using my photography on the front, and knowledge of New Zealand on the back, combining to create something that is simple, yet can be produced to a high quality and large volume to accommodate the always booming tourism market here in New Zealand, and then maybe other countries as well.

It is funny how life dictates what we do, who we meet and what happens to us along the way, regardless of how we feel about it, and it is funny how if we listen to ourselves we can end up doing things that alter everything around us and put us in situations that cause us to wonder if what we are doing is in our own best interest, regardless of who we are or what we have, and so we then go against what we want for ourselves, who we really are, only to eventually discover we have remained no different than the person we wanted to change, often settling for what we have, instead of all that we could have if we lived our life to the fullest and listened to ourselves.

I have found that being me is easier than if I try to be someone that other people want me to be, but I have also learnt that I can be who ever I want to be, that my only limits are the limits that I place upon myself, and because of that I have done some incredible things in my life, met some amazing people, people who have shown me that no one is more important than anyone else, that life throws some really crazy stuff at us and we will all deal with it in our own way, that those ways are neither right or wrong, just different, and that is what makes us human, whether we like it or not.

I have decided myself that I want to make a difference in other people’s lives, that this is something that has been a part of who I am since I can remember, but I now have the method of doing something about it, and that is what I am going to work towards, because that is what I want to do, and knowing that I am at the very least going to try is a damn sight better than knowing I didn’t, no matter what happens from now on.

I hope you all had a great week, in this issue of the weekly(ish) update I have included a mock up of a postcard I was playing around with using a water color function that I have in one of the programs I use that I like and may hold a few options down the track, but for now it is something that I can give to you.. it is called ‘Makarora Morning’.. I hope you like it.

Till soon.. Stay safe.. Be You!!!

Ps. I have just received a reply from one of the letters I wrote to the various car magazines asking for advice on becoming a car photographer, it is from New Zealand hot rod magazine who so far are the only one kind enough to have replied, they say they wish me luck with my endeavors, they do not really offer any advice, except to say they think I have a great chance to get a good grounding here in New Zealand, but to firmly establish myself I will need experience on the world stage, which I still think is nice of them.

“It cant rain all the time”...

Those six words are from 'The Crow', which is one of my all time favourite movies.

The film is based on an underground graphic novel, a comic book, by James O'Barr, around the plot that love conquers all, even death, and it starts with a young girl saying “People once believed that when people died a crow carries their soul to the land of the dead, but sometimes a terrible sadness is carried within and the soul cant rest, then sometimes, just sometimes, the crow can bring that soul back, to put the wrong things right”.

It stars a guy called Brandon Lee (martial arts expert Bruce Lee's son) who was accidentally killed when real bullets were used in a gun during one of the last scenes of the movie to be filmed.

There were heaps of 'lines' in the movie that I connected with, which I guess is something that makes a good movie stand out from all the others, but this week I am reminded of those six words, 'It cant rain all the time', because this week it 'stopped raining'.

Things have not been going so good the past few weeks for me.

I was unhappy with comments that were made to me regarding my relationship within a particular area of my family, something that I grew up with that I am unfortunately reminded about and have to live with, but something that makes me uncomfortable regardless of how well I deal with it.

Things started to break all around me, things that I had not planned for like my bike, and the memory card for my camera that my niece chewed on, which combined with my part time job cutting back my hours, had me seemingly being unable to pay my bills, repair and replace the things that had broken, or move forward towards my goal of starting my business.

I hate money and what it does to some people, but I am also smart enough to now that money can also provide options, give choices, and in the case of what I want to do with “Custom Vision”, it can also provide people with hope.

I have always used everything i've had to the best of my ability, to enjoy as much as I could with what I have had at any given moment, but money has never been important to me, because so many other things are.

I have often got myself into trouble financially, but I have also always got myself out of trouble financially.

I have stood on my own two feet since I was about fourteen when I started working, sure I have made mistakes, some huge, but I have also done some pretty amazing things considering the various situations I have been through.

One of the things throughout it all that stands out for me is when I have been genuinely needed some assistance, very few have offered the same assistance that I would in the same situation, and of those that have assisted me even fewer have not held it against me later, that amazes me and yet is what will ultimately drive me to succeed with 'Custom Vision'.

I want to help others simply because at various points in our lives, we need it. It is what I am working towards, and initially that will be done by a percentage, at this stage I think it will be ten percent, that is donated from the sale of each Limited Edition Print to my favourite charity, Canteen, which supports and assists young people with cancer.

I am also exploring the idea of allowing people to choose their own charity to donate to, but this is all just the start of what I want to do long term, because a few people have shown me that it is possible to give without wanting anything in return, except perhaps for those people to learn to give to others.

I know I should ideally save at least ten percent of what I earn each week so that I do not get into financial trouble, that of that ten percent maybe sixty to seventy percent should be put into a long term saving scheme, with a guaranteed slow rate of growth, and thirty to forty percent used on the stock market, with a much higher return. I have known this theory since I was sixteen years old and yet I still live from day to day, week to week, never really having enough to do what I want to, because it seems when I put myself into a position to do things 'properly' financially, something happens to change my financial situation drastically, and I have to change that.

This week I have kept up going to the gym on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays, but instead of going for a ride on my bike on the in-between days because my bike is broken, I go over to the gym and use one of their exercise bikes for an hour, not quite the same thing, but it allows me to keep my commitment to looking after myself a bit more as I get older.

I sent my “How do I become a motor sport photographer” letters to half a dozen top magazines in New Zealand and Australia, working with the 'there is no harm in asking' theory.

I also designed a business card, joined Flickr.com (where I can show my photos to people) and I have decided that I need to find more work, as I am struggling to pay my bills, let alone get ahead.

I am now mature enough to know that I need to do something to achieve financial freedom, I now want to not have to worry about, or see the 'funny side' of, me not being financially secure when I can be.

It is ironic that when I decide to get myself into a better position financially that I get less hours at my part time job, or for that matter get dismissed from my bus driving job when I had put myself into a position to enjoy working towards my goal of setting up my own business that would ultimately help others, and the fact that I was dismissed for an alcohol related event almost three weeks after I decided to stop drinking for reasons that were not related to my dismissal.

Sometimes I do struggle to be happy, things happen around me that often put me in a position where I have to question myself and what I am doing, but I have learnt asking myself these questions is a good thing, that the challenges I face are what makes me 'me', and one day I will look back and see the funny side of all the things that led me to achieving everything I wanted to do, and so much more.

I am not going to give up until I succeed... and I will succeed, because “It cant rain all the time”.

Till soon.. Stay safe.. Be You!!!

The Weekly(ish) Update - Issue 0003

The Weekly(ish) Update
3rd AUGUST 2008
Issue Three

Welcome back.

I am not someone who pretends to be smarter or better than the next person, if anything I down play who I am to allow others to show me who they really are. For me acceptance of others being different is important, and because of that it is perhaps easier for me to accept that people are in fact different, I know this, I know this, I know that we are meant to accept others for being who they are, but that doesn't make it any easier when people choose not to see me for who I am.

I have struggled most of my life to accept myself for simply being 'me', this should not be a major thing really, I mean I am not a poor black man angry that I am living in a white man's world where money is more important than life, I am not a young gay guy or girl struggling to express my sexuality because that is what I want to define me, nor am I one of billions of people around the world seeking an identity from within the confines of my religion, beliefs or ideals, I am simply an average guy who has grown up in what I consider a reasonably normal life, a life where I consider myself lucky to have the choices I have, the freedom to be 'me'.

Why then do I have so much trouble accepting that I am who I am?

I know a lot of things, I have seen and done an incredible amount of 'stuff' that I am happy I have done, things that include meeting my birth mother and father, forming relationships with the three parts of my family, going to Australia where I learnt to stand on my own two feet after having everything taken from me over and over again, meeting some incredible people who became my friends forever even though I may never see them again, working at some of the most amazing places on earth and with some of the most famous people on the planet, and learning that 'stuff' had no meaning until I learnt what meant something to me.

I have made many major changes in my life, one of the first I guess was when I decided to meet my birth mother, and then a year later my birth father, because I was unhappy with who I was at the time. Another was when I went to Australia because I was unhappy with who I was at that time, and more recently when I was in Australia and had become someone who on the outside had more than I ever had before, yet on the inside missed everything I had come from that was no longer a part of my life, in short again because I was unhappy.

Why then do I wait until I am unhappy to make changes in my life?
Its funny (my sense of humour again), I lost everything to discover what I had. I have lost a lot of time over the years with people I have learnt to love, but I guess that is the point, I learnt to love what I had because I learnt what it was like to not have 'it'.

I remember one day in Melbourne when the young man living is a room in the building next to mine was found dead, two weeks after he had died. I was so humbled that no one had missed him for two weeks. The same thing could have happened to me and that truly scared me for the first time ever in my life, I can not think of anything worse to happen to someone than for them to not only die alone, but no one noticed, no one missed him for two weeks, and it wasn't until the smell became so bad that the person in the room next door complained to someone that he was discovered.

I have lived within and seen some crazy shit over the years, things that you would never believe if I bluntly described what I have actually seen through my own two eyes, let alone the stories I have been told, because most people choose not to see it, most people walk around with their eyes shut, and when most people catch glimpses of how some people live they are disgusted at people being people, people who are simply living their lives the way that we have unknowingly accepted as being okay, because we choose not to look at or do anything about the truth behind the simple fact that some people have not made the same choices, that some people discover inside them the strength to live their lives differently, right or wrong, and often alone. The reality is that 'life' is all around us, everywhere, in everything.

I have been lucky enough to have the support of many people over the years, because at various times in my life other people have given me the strength to be 'me'. I have gone completely off the rails many times but something inside me wont let go of who I am, not who you see or know, but who I really am, and as hard as it has sometimes been I am glad that my life has allowed me to see 'life' through my eyes, to have lived and (sometimes) learnt, to be 'me', through the good times and the bad.

I read a book this week, the first book I have read in years (I think the last one my birth mother gave me which was by the 'American' cyclist Lance Armstrong – Its Not About The Bike, which was a good story about him surviving cancer and winning the Tour De France, even though I am not a great fan of the man himself) and the book this week was given to me by my adopted brothers wife, which is my sister in-law right?

Its called Smokey Joes Cafe, and is by an Australian guy called Bryce Courtney, who wrote the first book I can remember reading, called The Power Of One. I'm not much of a reader, I gotta concentrate kinda hard to focus on each word on each line, but because it was given to me I made a point of reading it, and being completely honest the story was okay, I kept wanting it to get more exciting and as the pages turned I found myself near the end just wanting to finish it, but I must tell you that I was in tears when I closed the book for the final time and because of that highly recommend it, the story reminds us of what, and who, we should never forget.
But overall I have had a very average week, I have been in a fairly average mood all week, which has not been helped by 'events' that took place during the week, but my mood has not been solely caused by them either, so I have just kept working towards my goals knowing that eventually things will turn around.

I don't like being unhappy, I think with my last job I found something that I enjoyed doing that regardless of how I felt each day I would be able to 'turn on' my happy face and eventually get lost in what I was doing, I think there have been a few jobs in my life like that, jobs that I have been able to connect with and give myself to.

I think that within what I am doing I find a simple change of my thinking, what I am thinking about, changes how I feel, which makes sense when you think about it, and so now that I am in the same situation everyday, thinking about the same things, it is harder to alter what I am thinking about, yet logically what I need to do.

When I left Wellington to go to Auckland to live with my birth mother when we first met, I was changing my way of thinking, when I left New Zealand and went to Australia I was changing my way of thinking, and when I returned I did the same thing, I changed my way of thinking, but each time I did this I changed the situation, the reality within that remains the same.

The point of what I am trying to tell you is that I do struggle to be myself sometimes, that I am not always happy with how my life is going and in my own way try to deal with that as best I can, I believe we all do,

Some old fella called Socrates said a very long time ago that 'Life is Remembering', and I believe that to be true, because life is as much about discovery, and learning to be who we are, as it is about remembering what we have discovered, and learnt to be.

Till soon.. Stay safe.. Be You!!!

The Weekly(ish) Update - Issue 0002

The Weekly(ish) Update
27th JULY 2008
Issue Two

Kia ora and welcome to Issue Two of 'The Weekly(ish) Update'.

Firstly I would like to apologise for some of my spelling, I guess a few of you would have wondered what you had received when you saw I had sent you 'The Weely(ish) Update' and there were a few other errors that I discovered later, including the fact all of you would be unable to read this thing as I see it because none of you have the font's I use installed on your computer. I will include a copy of the font I use for each issue, and also the font used for the 'Custom Vision' logo. To install these fonts just copy the files into your 'font' folder, which is usually found in the windows folder, then restart your computer and then check out these documents in their intended form (try and remember the names of the files you put in there cos for those of you who find it to hard to read you can delete the files and it will go back to how you originally saw it after a restart of your computer, but if you have any questions please ask).

I have had another good week, and I think a lot of that has to do with me currently being very motivated to succeed and because I am so positive there are positive things happening around me.

I have noticed this in a few areas, I have noticed where I am staying my adopted parents have seemingly been more positive towards me, at work the staff have been more positive (well.. most of em anyway), and the reactions of various other people have been more positive. I know some of these people have actually been more positive, but I also guess that my outlook has made things seem more positive as well, regardless of my current situation.

On Monday I went to the gym as I have been doing the past few weeks at 7.30am, then afterwards I decided I should do what I had planned and go and investigate that printer I mentioned last week, so I went to the Noel Lemmings store just around the corner from the gym.

I parked my push bike up against the new washing machines inside the door, turned around and there in front of me was a series of posters, all nicely lined up for some promotional offer regarding renting computers, where if you did rent you got a free printer, and as you can probably guess, it was the printer I went to look at.

Now normally this would not have meant anything, but when I asked the guy at the counter for some info on the printer I wanted to see he told me that the store did not have them, that they were a new item and that they only had the previous model, which was not the one I wanted.

Obviously I asked about the offer in the posters and was told that it had expired a few days earlier, the guy actually knew very little about the printer I wanted except that the offer was redeemed elsewhere, that it was all installed for you and that Noel Lemmings just did the paperwork side of things for them, but he did tell me that if I wanted one he should be able to order it in for me, and maybe even get me a discount.

Whilst I was there I also had a look at their range of laptops as mine had started playing up terribly and in the back of my mind I was concerned that it would stop working altogether, probably at the worst possible time, like when I was in the middle of doing something important.

It had served me well, I had got heaps of use out of it in the 5 years I since I first brought it, and it was what had helped my skills progress greatly and was a very useful computer until I started to have trouble with it recently.

I briefly explored the option of getting a 'Mac book pro', which for those of you who do not know is a high end laptop made by a company called macintosh, the same company that makes I pod, but the 'Mac book pro' I wanted was way out of my price range, and something I have to put on my 'wish list'.

The one that stood out after I had explored my 'wish list' option did so for two reasons, the first was that its system specifications were incredible (320gig hard drive, 2 gig ram and 512 MB video card) for the $1800 price tag, and secondly it was the latest model of the laptop that I currently have, which at the time stood out for the same reasons.

I spoke a little bit to the guy about it, but I was only mildly curious, and only really interesting part of the conversation was when he told me about how the recession had effected them and that it would effecting them for awhile yet, because apparently their group of businesses do two major buys each year from suppliers, one just after Christmas and one mid year, they were just about to do their mid year buy and as people were buying less, and suppliers still had profit margins to meet etc., the prices of items such as laptops etc. would noticeably increase leading up to Christmas.

What he was saying made sense, the laptop I was looking at, with all of its components, was at least $500 cheaper than I felt it was worth, which I was told was because they had brought them at a good price, and the were obviously still making money on them, but these prices would not last when the new stock arrived and put on the shelf.

This gave me a few things to think about as I left the store with all this new information.

I then went to check out the printer on the internet and compared various reviews etc. against what I wanted to use it for and basically decided that it was the printer I wanted to get. I called my bank and asked if I could borrow $500 to pay for it and was told that they don't lend amounts that small, they asked if I needed anything else and suggested applying for a bigger loan.

I can already hear a few of you groaning painfully as I tell you now I applied for a $2500 loan from the bank, but don't worry, it was declined as apparently my part time job is not enough earnings for them.

I had begun to think how sensible I would be to get a new laptop and printer, that these would be two of the main tools I would need to begin my business and both would have to be reliable. Sure when the business was making some money I could afford the big printer I needed and my 'wish list' laptop, but these two item would be a perfect bridge until I could afford them, the crazy cool camera, and all the other stuff I will eventually get to maintain the highest standard possible that is going to be an integral part of my business, so I went back to Noel Lemmings to see what they could do.

On my way back I came across a brochure for the Bond and Bond stores, which is part of the same chain of stores as Noel Lemmings, they just operate under a different name, and in this brochure was the laptop I was looking at $200 cheaper than the one at Noel Lemmings, and came with 2 gig extra ram (4 gig in total), which I think ultimately decided that if it was possible I would get it, and the printer.

I asked the guy at Noel Lemmings if they would match the price and specifications of the computer at Bond and Bond, he asked the manager and I was told yes, I asked about the printer and if I would still be able to get a discount, and was told they would be able to order it in and could have it $50 cheaper than they would be selling it for, so I asked if I could have both and pay them off on one of those 36 months interest free things I keep seeing on T.V, to which I was told they only did 12 months. I quickly worked it out that both would cost me $50 per week for 12 months, and knowing that I could afford that I applied, but was again declined.

I asked why and they called their finance people and I spoke to a very nice lady on the phone for a few minutes about my credit history, and when I told her I had been a previous customer and never missed a payment, she checked this info and then told me that my application was accepted and that I could take the laptop home with me right then if I wanted to, or I could wait until the printer arrived. I simply smiled and said “Now please.”

I had just got myself a new laptop and printer, and it was only Monday.

Tuesday I discovered that assignment number three of my Photography Diploma is a lot harder than the previous two, it took up most of the week just learning how to complete it, and gathering the information required just to understand it all only came together on Thursday afternoon, but within that I made a huge discovery and a learnt a major aspect that makes everything else so much more relevant.

The assignment was meant to have been teaching me about 'zone rulers' and the 18% grey scale, but has effectively taught me how to actually take a photo, because as I was trying to understand how it all worked, I figured out how it actually works.

I mentioned last week I simply wanted the knowledge that the course gave me, not the piece of paper, and that instead of spinning dials and making adjustments after I had taken an image to correct it, I wanted to be able to set the camera to do what I wanted it to do and then take the image I wanted to take. The discovery I made in my Photography Diploma this week was a massive step towards doing that.

Without going into huge detail I use to think that there were only three steps to setting up a camera (ISO, aperture, and shutter speed) and could not understand why the process did not make any sense, but I have learnt that there is actually four and that fourth step (the exposure control metre) is crucial. I now understand how it works.. it now makes sense to me.. and that is a huge achievement.. I actually couldn't stop laughing at the time because it all finally made sense.

Sure I have heaps of work to do yet before I win any awards or do anything really significant, but I have made a huge amount of progress this week and that only encourages me more.

I think I have a strange sense of humour, things I find funny some people would be horrified at, like the video of someone being electrocuted that was sent to me cos the person involved was stupid enough to stand on top of an electric train in India and grab the cable that had a million volts running through it, killing him instantly, or the series of books and website 'The Darwin Awards' (where people do mankind a service by dying during an act of extreme stupidity) is something that amuses me greatly, but regardless I am great at finding reasons to laugh, especially at myself, even if in the situation it may not appear appropriate.

About a year or so ago I joined a site on the internet called 'Friends Reunited' and the intentions of this website is to allow you to be able to contact old school friends etc., or in my case an ex girlfriend I had not seen or heard from in over fifteen years.

The last time I saw her was at my birth mothers house, just after I had met my birth mother, so I would have been about twenty one years old and was going through one of the more emotional years of my life.

A year that included assisting my girlfriend confront her 'sick' grandfather and tell her parents what he had done to her, contacting my birth mother for the first time, my best friend being killed, telling my adopted parents I wanted to meet my birth mother, meeting my birth mother, telling my adopted parents that I wanted to live with my birth mother and her new husband, and telling my girlfriend that I wanted to live with my birth mother instead of her.

Up until then I had only really had the one girlfriend and we basically went through everything together after our families seemingly pushed us away for trying to be ourselves after events within our lives changed each of us separately forever. We went through heaps of bad things and enjoyed occasional good things together, which I learnt meant a lot but I struggled to show her, we both did stupid things to each other and I think we both reached a point where we cared about each other enough to let each other go and do what we each thought was right for ourselves at that time, not really having the support to do anything else.

So it turned out that whilst I went to live with my birth mother in Auckland, she would leave New Zealand to go and live with her mother who had just moved to Perth, Australia. The last time I saw her I was living at my birth mothers place in Auckland, and she was going to fly to Australia to live with her mum.

A lot of things happened over the next twelve months in my life. I tried to be someone I wasn't, tried to hide how I felt after unintentionally realising that instead of embracing everyone that was a part of my life, I was pushing them all away, and that at least one person who had tried to be there for me at that time, the one person I could talk to, I had also pushed away.

Things went from bad to worse, I was asked to leave my birth mothers place and I had no where to turn, so I began to turn to myself and after meeting my birth father about a year after meeting my birth mother, I chose to leave New Zealand and go in search of 'someone' I missed very much.

Its funny how life treats people, I arrived in Perth with no idea of what I was going to do, or where I was going to go, I just knew I had one thing that I wanted to do, but within twenty four hours I had been bashed by a huge biker outside a nightclub, had everything stolen from the backpackers where I was staying and discovered that my ex girlfriend was engaged, and pregnant, to a guy she had met in a nightclub soon after arriving in Australia, and she did not want to see me. I never did the one thing I went there to do and I always remembered that.

So many things happened over the next few years that I simply bounced from place to place, town to town, not ever really having any idea what was going on, moving from one chaotic situation to another, one adventure to the next, only sometimes getting a moment to think about things that had been, or where I was going, but a part of me always wondered what had happened to her, I wondered where she was, what she was doing, and if she was happy.

Fast forward at least fifteen years, and I am back in New Zealand and signed up on the 'Friends Reunited' website. I never went on the website actively searching for her, or anyone else for that matter, I just joined one day when I was trying to find a 'special someone else', who is a completely separate story, and saw that she had joined when I filled in my registration details, so I left her a note saying that I hoped things had worked out for her, and over the next how ever many months forgotten all about it, to the point where when I would get messages from the website saying I needed to update my details, I would simply delete them without even looking at the content of the email.

So you can imagine my surprise when I get a message from the website this week saying that I have a message from someone, yet I know straight away who it was from, and I was right.

She was already a member of the site when I joined, that is why I could contact her, she could not contact me when she had joined because I was not a member, so she was replying to the message I had left for her probably about a year ago, and she told me that she now had two girls, was married, lived near Sydney, and had a couple of horses, she always liked horses.

The first time I read it I didn't have a lot of time to reply, I was a little bit surprised to hear from her but I wanted to tell her about the adventure I had been on whilst I was in Australia, how I had 'started afresh' in so many places, met so many people, done so many things, and that I had discovered what I was looking for was in fact who I am, who I have always been, but I only had time to write a quick note, something that roughly said “I am surprised to hear from you, I hope this doesn't hurt, I cant talk now, talk to you soon”, but I am not sure exactly what I said cos I cant go and check the message because when I returned to reply properly there was a new message from her that said she did not think it was appropriate that she talk to me if I was still had feelings for her out of respect for her husband, and the account was closed.

Like I said earlier I have a weird sense of humour, and I had a bit of a giggle to myself afterwards because that was literally the only thing I could do about it, and hey, at least now I know for sure she is happy, right???

And so it has been a fairly good week, I still have to finish assignment number three, which was effected this week by my ability to learn, or lack of, and some very shitty weather which prevented me from getting outside in the sun as required in the assignment, and so assignment number three is the main focus of this week, but overall I have had a good week since we last spoke and I guess the saying is true - “Positive people create positive situations”.

I would like to thank those of you who sent me an email, I am glad you found something in the words I share that allow you to understand me a little bit better.. I also must mention that I only said that my boss was an old man in his sixties because he actually looks a lot older than his actual age, unlike some people I know who look much, much younger.

I also must mention that I am unable to reply to txt messages at the moment simply because I cant afford to add any credit to my phone, and that it might happen occasionally until I am sorted out better financially, as my priorities are doing what I need to do to get 'Custom Vision' set up.

This week I will concentrate on getting assignment number three done, then I have to concentrate on making some money by selling a few photos in frames at local markets, which by the way there is actually very few of in Wellington, so I have another challenge ahead of me.

I also had an idea this week about writing to a couple of car magazines in New Zealand and a) Asking for some advice on how I get into the scene to become a motor sport photographer, and b) asking them if I can take photos of cars to gain experience, cos I am sure someone will want their car photographed for free. My time would be all it would cost me and the experienced would be invaluable. It was just a thought.

I have included a couple of photos, two I quickly took last night at work, one of the van I get to do laps in, and one of a plane I pass regularly, they are just snapshots, but aided with the knowledge I am learning in my course. The third is of a park I spent some time in when I went to Putaruru the night before my Aunty Jan's funeral, and shows a little bit of my creativity using a camera. I will try and include a few photos when possible so you can see what I am up to and the progress I am making.

And so that ends the second instalment of The Weekly(ish) Update, Till soon.. Stay safe.. Be You!!!

The Weekly(ish) Update - Issue 0001

The Weekly(ish) Update
18th JULY 2008
ISSUE ONE

I have decided to do this because I want a way to include my family and friends in what I am doing, I have never been very good at keeping in regular contact with anyone, and I have recently decided that this is something I would like to change.

I am working towards starting my own business at the moment, it is something I have thought about doing for many years, and so including everyone in that process seems like a good idea.

I figure that sharing this new adventure will assist me in various aspects of the project, and I expect some of you will even offer advice, opinions, praise and criticism, but ultimately you all are now a part of my next great adventure.

So what am I doing?

Well, at the moment I am in Wellington, I am staying at my adopted parents house which has its ups and its downs.

One of the down sides is that I still feel as if I am treated differently, that our level of respect for each other is on completely different levels, but one of the upsides is that I get to see my two nieces regularly, Noelle (three) and Delilah (one) always manage to make me happy, because within the knowledge I am lucky enough to share 'moments' with each, I know regardless of what they do they are simply being themselves and always give me a reason to smile.

The main reason I have chosen to stay here is because I know this will be the last time we share any great amount of time together, so being here is my opportunity to be a part of the girls life, regardless of how I feel about the way the rest of us treat each other, all I can do is try to be honest with myself and accept that I only have control over my actions and no one else.

It is weird living in Wellington again, I have not yet made any real friends, I have not seen any of my old friends either, so I kinda miss the people who I have spent time with over the past few years, which is basically everyone I have offered the option of reading this, and a few others I have lost contact with.

Its funny, this time last year I had heaps of friends, and I was making new ones every day, but when I sent everyone the option of receiving a regular email letting you all know what I was doing, only about a dozen people replied, which I guess could indicate how well I maintain my friendships, or the fact I have the contact details of the wrong people “,)

When I was driving the bus the hardest part of what I did was knowing that I would only get to share a few moments with everyone I met and that I was ultimately restricted to a timetable, that I would have to move on regardless of what I wanted to do.

One of the best parts was that I would be able to visit everyone I knew almost anywhere in New Zealand within a three week period, which for me , someone who is not good at maintaining relationships, was the perfect way to allow friendships to grow, and they did.

Sure I miss the driving, the scenery and the lifestyle, but mostly I miss the people, I miss all of my friends.

My new job is part time, at the moment the only hours I am guaranteed are Saturday and Sunday nightshirt, from 11pm until 7am, and this is OK cos I need the money, so I am grateful for the hours.

I sometimes get a few extra shifts which keeps my head above water so to speak, and in all honesty I am lucky to have walked into a job that allows me to study and work towards starting my own business, admittedly a lot slower than originally planned due to my financial restraints, but I am getting there and have never given up regardless of what happened previously.

The job itself is OK, not great but OK, and it basically consists of driving Air New Zealand staff from one car park to another, picking them up and dropping them off.

Most of the staff keep to themselves and so there is very little interaction between us, which makes things a little boring, some of the staff are cool, friendly and polite etc. and a couple of them are so 'ungrateful' they do nothing but complain.

My boss is an old guy in his sixties who is one of those genuinely nice people that are completely honest with everyone, which as far as I am concerned is awesome and we get along great, I genuinely appreciate having the job and he genuinely appreciates me being there.

It is funny actually, most of the guys I work with are heaps older, which is the opposite of when I was driving the buses (for those of you who don't know I am almost forty), so listening to them talk about not being able to poo for a week and their other major problems in life makes me feel young again, not that I have ever really felt old.

I have always done what I felt was right, or what felt right, throughout my life and so ultimately my life is my own. I use to get people telling me they thought I was a lot younger than I am regularly, other people simply wouldn't judge me by my age and accepted me for who I am, which I think allows a certain freedom to be yourself around them, because regardless of what people think, at the end of the day I am me, and 'me' is not old.

A couple of months ago someone told me something that was a huge compliment, they told me that I was the one thing that they would remember about New Zealand after being here for a year, something that made me think about how right I am to be true to myself regardless of other peoples opinions, because at the end of the day I am the one who is responsible for myself, in every situation.

For those of you who have seen me 'unrestricted' and 'freely myself', you will know that I can be infectiously happy, and kinda loud, you will know that I am capable of bouncing off the walls of other peoples happiness for our enjoyment, for hours and hours, if the people around me simply accept me for being who I am, because despite what some people think I am not a product of my environment, I am a product of my own desire to be happy and unreservedly share that happiness with others.

It has taken me a lot of hard work to be me, I have suffered tremendous depression, and given so much of myself away through various addictions, it has taken me so many 'life lessons' to be where I am today, knowing I still have so much more to learn.

I have had various things influence my life, I have done various life courses, escaped experiences that have trapped others, and I have been lucky enough to grow up being honest to myself and trying to be honest to those around me, because I have learnt that is the right way for me to live.

I think that one of my biggest lessons was 'faith' that no one intentionally hurts someone else, that we each are capable of doing some truly horrific things if we allow ourselves to, but no one intentionally hurts anyone else.

This was recently explained to me quite simply, I was told that if people did intentionally hurt each other then when we got in our car and drove down the road we would not have 'faith' that the person who was driving towards us in the other lane would remain on their side of the road, and we do.

Sure accidents happen, circumstance puts people in different places in their life and situations can dictate reactions that are unpredictable for a variety of reasons, but factually, we all remain on our side of the road, we all are ultimately responsible for ourself.

So I have reached a point in my life now where I feel the need to clean myself up a little bit for the future, I have discovered a desire to treat myself better than I have been treating myself previously, which all seemed to happen in the middle of last year when I would have appeared to be living my life to the fullest... Ironic huh?

That was also about the same time I decided to do a Diploma in Photography, a decision aided in the making by my Aunty Jan, when I was staying at my birth fathers place and he kept reminding me that I needed to save some money.

I am not fussed by the qualification, it is the information that the course provides me with that I am interested in, it is that information that will greatly assist my skills, and so I committed myself to the course as a Christmas present to myself last year.

I got seriously distracted with the events that arose from my (unfair) dismissal, but have now completed two of twelve assignments, getting 80% in the first, and 70% in the second.

The course itself is bloody hard as I have a huge amount of trouble concentrating when reading, words blend and I get confused halfway through sentences more than ever before, the second assignment took me two months just to understand what was going on as it was fairly technical, and I only managed that after getting help via other books and reference material that explained the course material in several different ways, eventually leading me to a rough understanding of what was going on.

I kinda let myself down a little bit by submitting a photo that was required as part of the second assignment that I had second thoughts about submitting, as I thought it could have been better and was not as good as it could have been, but I learnt my lesson and that wont happen again.

As well as the Diploma in Photography I have been doing research and studying various business related courses etc., including one from the tax department, and I am finding a lot of other information on the internet, all designed to give me the most opportunity possible to succeed.

Everything I am doing is designed to put myself in the best position to make my business a success, because ultimately that responsibility lies with me. I am still a few months away from officially starting my business, but at the moment I am doing things to ensure that I give myself every opportunity to be as successful as possible.

I actually began to conceive the original idea at the beginning of 2008 when I was driving buses around New Zealand, taking photos of groups in some of the most scenic places imaginable and from that point photography became something more than just part of what I did each day as a part of my job.

I brought my first 'proper' camera not long after and found myself taking photos more and more outside of my job, even though I did not really have any idea what I was doing technically.

I would see an image in my head and muck around with the different dials and settings until the image I had on the little screen at the back of the camera matched the image I had in my mind, often missing out on images because I did not know what I was doing, or in rare cases capturing an image by fluke, which I guess kept me going.

I deleted a lot of photos, keeping only a few that I liked, and eventually someone saw these and commented that they thought I had an eye for it, which only encouraged me further.

Towards the middle of last year I lost my drivers licence for three months because I had received too many speeding tickets, so I got to spend time with various members of my family and a few friends, including at one point my Aunty Jan (who passed away early this year after a long battle with cancer) and it was with her that as I previously mentioned that the original idea presented itself and I made a few goals.

My ideal goal would be to travel the world going to Formula One races, V8 Supercar races, Moto GP and World Rally Championship events, taking photos of the best race cars in the world and selling Limited Edition framed prints of those photos, making a good living and donating a percentage of each print to charity.

I know that is something I am going to have to work up to, so prior to that I would like to put myself into a position where I can take photos of New Zealand and Australian cars (old hot rods, race cars and street cars) and bikes amongst awesome scenery and sell Limited Edition framed prints, using pristine local timbers for the frames and high quality art paper and inks that last over 100 years for the images, once I have experimented to see how big the market is, both here and overseas.

It may turn out that I sell Limited Edition scenery photos with a similar high quality to get myself started, it may turn out that it becomes my main market and the autosport becomes a hobby, but regardless I am committed to this project and not restricting myself to any one thing.

Due to my financial situation I think initially I will be taking scenery photos and selling them at the market on Saturdays and Sundays to get some cash together first, which is what I want to do because I want to make this business grow from that into my ideal goal of being able to travel the world doing what I want to, and that all must start from me doing what is necessary to make it work, from being prepared to work to achieve the success I want.

All things must begin somewhere, and after months of deciding I have finally come up with a name for the business...

CUSTOM VISION PHOTOGRAPHY

… and I have chosen this name because I think it defines what the business is all about, my photography, and what I want from the business.

The name is representative of my vision to help others which I will initially be doing by donating a percentage of what I earn to charity, which will probably be my favourite charity Canteen, cos as far as I am concerned it is all about the kids.

There are a few things I would like to finish this off with, the first is letting you know what my goals are for this week, and the second is I would like to tell you what I have learned.

This week I do not have much work, my two weekend shifts plus a day shift on Friday, so I have a bit more time to study this coming week than I did this past week, I would like to try and complete my next assignment in my Photography Diploma this week to keep the momentum going, and I would also like to explore a good way to get myself started and see what markets are open and when in Wellington.

I also have to do something about organising a new printer, something that will be suitable for me printing my own small prints, the bigger ones will have to wait until I get myself a little more sorted out. I have heard a few good things about the HP C6380 Photosmart printer so I will have a look at that to begin with.

I also have started myself on an exercise program that I have been doing for a few weeks now, Monday, Wednesday and Fridays I start the day nice and early and am in the gym by 7.30am(ish) which I think is $25 a week well spent, and Tuesday and Thursdays I take myself for a bike ride, again by 7.30am(ish). I enjoy starting the day off knowing I am doing something good for me and am slowly getting into making this a normal part of my day.

The other thing I want to do this week is get some information on creating a Photography Portfolio, it is included later on in my course, but there is a national photography course run by Canon that I am going to enter, and I want to begin looking at what is required to at the very least give it my best, so I have to put a little money aside to get myself a book off the internet that shows me other peoples ideas, and I am sure if I look I will find something that is exactly what I am looking for.

And finally, What have I learnt this week???

- I have learnt that sometimes when it seems like no one cares that is the time to care about yourself, that you are your own best friend and worst enemy.

So there we have it folks, the first issue of The Weekly(ish) Update has come to the end. I am already looking forward to the next one.

Till soon.. Stay safe.. Be You!!!

PS. Next issue I will include a few photos... And if anyone knows someone who would like to know what I am up to, please ask them to email me so I can add them to my contact list.

Walk 4 Life - North Island

I don't think most stories are meant to start in the middle, but unlike most stories, this is my story. Actually, this is only part of ...
